Everest Nutrition Krill Oil Capsules

Everest Nutrition Krill Oil Capsules

I work in health care, and have been a vitamin/supplement taker for several years. My particular cocktail includes a multivitamin, vitamin C, vitamin D, and omega-3 fish oil capsules. Ever since I completed my Honors Thesis years back in which I studied the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on depression and anxiety, I have been a committed fan of these powerhouse nutrients. In North America, most people’s diets are lacking in omega-3 fatty acids, as we are not a nation which eats much in the way of fish.

Omega-3 fatty acids are multi-functional nutrients which aid in a number of body processes. It is thought that omega-3′s contribute to optimal functioning of the heart, skin, joints and brain to name a few. Many prominent health practitioners advocate supplementing with omega-3′s as a preventative health measure.

I have been taking fish oil capsules for years, and have tried many different brands. A common complaint of mine is the oft-noted “fish-burp”. No matter what brand I have tried, I always find that I get a “fishy” aftertaste which is really off-putting to say the least. I was intrigued when I was offered the opportunity to test Everest Nutrition Krill Oil capsules, which promise a number of things, including no fishy aftertaste.

The lack of aftertaste is only one of the many benefits of this product. Krill, which are tiny shrimp-like crustaceans, are harvested from Antarctic waters, which ensures their purity. Krill are a plentiful organism, in fact, if you totalled the total mass of all krill on earth, they would outweigh human beings! That’s a lot of krill! Another benefit of which I was unaware–krill are abundant in a substance called astaxanthin, an anti-oxidant which help gets rid of toxins and free radicals in the body. In addition, Everest Nutrition’s Krill Oil has higher concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids than other comparable krill oil brands. The chemical formulation used by Everest Nutrition is done in such a way that the omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, are easily absorbed by your body.

I have been using Everest Nutrition Krill Oil for a month, and have been very happy with this product. They capsules (which they call Capliques) are easily swallowed, and smaller than other fish oil capsules that I have used. And true to the claim, there is no fishy aftertaste, no fish burp! That made me very happy indeed!

If you want to read even more about the many benefits of Everest Nutrition Krill Oil capsules, you can check out their website and order some today!

Calcium and Vitamin D: No Longer the Darlings of Women’s Health

Vitamin D Supplements

Article first published as Calcium and Vitamin D — No Longer the Darlings of Women’s Health on Technorati.

What’s a health conscious girl to do? Once the darlings of women’s health, calcium and vitamin D are suddenly on the outs. It seemed a near universal truth that both pre and post-menopausal women could reduce their risk of osteoporosis by taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Stronger, healthier bones the result of taking inexpensive supplements, right? Maybe not.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, in a draft recommendation released this week, advised that daily supplementation with 400 I.U. of vitamin D and 1000 mg calcium showed no effect in the reduction of osteoporotic fractures in post-menopausal women. The task force therefore recommends that post-menopausal women do not take vitamin D and calcium supplements at the aforementioned doses. There was insufficient evidence to determine whether supplementation with higher doses of vitamin D had any effect on reducing the incident of osteoporosis fractures.

Why are these recommendations important? Nearly half of all women over the age of 50 will experience a fracture due to osteoporosis. Fractures in older women often result in increased morbidity and mortality. Hip fractures are an especially egregious type of health event. Women who break a hip have double the mortality rate in the year following the fracture.

The panel stopped short of discouraging women from taking vitamin D supplements. The so-called “sunshine vitamin” is not only important for bone health, it also is responsible for the maintenance of many organ systems in the body, and helps to maintain a healthy immune system. Deficiencies in vitamin D are thought to be associated with a higher risk of developing multiple sclerosis.

The news on calcium supplements is considerably less rosy. A 2011 study published in the British Medical Journal suggested that women who took calcium supplements have a higher risk of clotting abnormalities and heart attack.

So back to the original question, what’s a health-conscious girl to do? How best to minimize your risk of developing osteoporosis? The answers seem unclear, but point back to healthy lifestyle choices. Eating a balanced diet, getting adequate (but not excessive) vitamin D by exposure to sunlight and regular exercise appear to contribute to overall bone health.

Freebie Alert! Vitanity Drink Mix

Another cool freebie for the taking! This time, the offer is available to both U.S. and Canadian residents, 18 years or older. It’s a sample packet of Vitanity Drink Mix. There are five different nutrient mixes to choose from, depending on your needs–Charge, Focus, Amplify, Resist and Soothe. The nutrient breakdown for each mix is listed, so you can get an idea of what they are putting into their product, and whether it’s appropriate for you.

After you choose your sample, you can add up to three flavors to put into the packets. Very cool! I chose Amplify with cherry and raspberry flavoring. The site says that your sample should arrive within 2-6 weeks. Check it out!

Disclosure: I did not receive any compensation or promotional consideration in exchange for this post.

Freebie Alert–Vitamints!

Vitamints--Calm

Here is a cool freebie I came across today–a new product on the market called Vitamints. It’s exactly what it sounds like, a vitamin which is formulated into a mint. There are several different varieties, depending on what you are looking for (including multivitamins, calm, energy and focus). They don’t contain as much vitamin content as you would find in your typical supplement, so you can safely take up to 10 mints per day.

As a pharmacist, I can tell you that many people find it difficult to take vitamins, due to their size. There is a certain subset of people who, for whatever reasons, can’t deal with the idea of swallowing a large, solid tablet. For this reason, this product seems like a good idea. The website says that they can be swallowed, or sucked upon like a regular candy mint.

For a limited time, you can get a free sample packet of Vitamints. Sorry folks, this offer is for Canada only. Click here to order your free sample! One sample per household.
