I recently received a copy of the book Bridges by Maria Murnane. It was a happy day for me, as I have read other books by this author, and enjoyed them all. Particularly I loved the series of novels featuring Waverly Bryson. Her most recent novel features a female protagonist named Daphne White, who also appears in her novel Wait for the Rain.
Bridges centers on Daphne and her two closest friends, KC and Skylar. At the beginning of the novel, the three friends are getting together for a girls’ weekend in New York City. It’s a time for celebrating! Skylar is finally getting married after years of dating, and the girls are ready for a few days of fun.
These three best friends couldn’t be more different. Daphne is the quiet, thoughtful one, whose personal and professional life are, to be honest, a bit unfulfilling. Skylar is a beautiful, high flying executive with a fabulous bank account and caring fiance. KC is the outdoorsy, sports and fitness loving gal, who lives on the sunny coast of California.
So what could be more fun than spending the weekend with your best friends? Well, right below the surface a few problems are simmering. Daphne is happy for Skylar, but finds her feelings of jealousy are jeopardizing their friendship. KC has a few secrets of her own (I won’t spoil the plot by mentioning them!). Skylar is also mulling some pretty important decisions all the while.
So before the resolution of the novel, there are tears, frustration, more tears, and finally laughter. You won’t get a lot of plot twists in Bridges but I didn’t find that it detracted from the story. The characters are all likeable, and their conversations are very realistic. Even though I did not have much in common with any of these women, I found it easy to imagine myself chatting with them. This is a light, enjoyable read, perfect for a quiet afternoon.
You can find Bridges on Amazon .
